What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns themselves are small, cap-like structures that are placed over the visible surface of teeth. They can be crafted from a variety of non-metal and metal materials, but our team opts for metal-free Emax and zirconia, as they’re incredibly durable and offer a beautiful, natural appearance. We use dental crowns in the following situations:

  • When a tooth is severely misshapen and discolored
  • After a root canal has been completed
  • To strengthen a tooth with a large cavity filling
  • To replace a missing tooth with a dental implant

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The dental crown treatment process can typically be completed within two appointments at our office. During your first visit, one of our skilled dentists in Mansfield will prepare your affected tooth for the restoration by removing a small amount of enamel. This will allow the crown to lay securely over the tooth and lay flush with your surrounding teeth. We’ll capture impressions of your tooth that we’ll send off to our dental laboratory and place a temporary crown over the tooth until the permanent one arrives.

As soon as your permanent Emax or zirconia dental crown arrives, our dentists will make sure it fits the shade of your tooth and is a perfect fit before cementing it atop your prepared tooth.
